Four Design A/S develops, manufactures and sells canteen and conference furniture for customers worldwide.

Four Design A/S has always focused on being an environmentally friendly company. In our day-to-day operations as well as in our strategic planning, we are committed to managing our environmental impacts in a responsible way.

Four Design A/S focus on the environment in our own production as well as in that of our suppliers. Thus, sustainability is an integrated part of our products and everyday life.

Four Design A/S strives to be upfront in the developmental stage of our industry whilst ensuring that environmental legislation is complied with.

In addition, we will:

  • Continuously improve our processes and products to optimise our environmental performance during the full lifecycle of the products
  • Prevent emissions and contamination
  • Focus on our partners’ ability to continuously make environmental improvements – thus improve our indirect environmental performance
  • Constantly maintain focus on environmental impacts by educating and motivating our employees to be and to act with environmentally conscious
  • Minimise energy consumption and, in addition, endeavour to restrict/replace raw material and subsidiary materials, which could be a burden on the environment and the climate
  • Maintain an open dialogue with authorities, neighbours and other stakeholders about our environmental conditions and goals

Our environmental policy has been communicated throughout the company and to stakeholders and is publicly available.

Diplomas and Certificates

Four Design A/S can document our commitment to the environment. We have been awarded the

Miljøforum Fyn’s Environment Diploma in 2010 , 2012, 2014, and obtained ISO14001 certificate in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.

Miljøforum Fyn

MiljøForum Fyn is a sustainability network consisting of approx. 110 companies from the private sector together with the municipalities and other public environmental authorities in the Danish region Fyn. The mission of MiljøForum Fyn is to promote sustainable business development with a focus on environmental responsibilities.

One of the objectives of MiljøForum Fyn is to promote cleaner technology and environmental management in the region’s private sector through the provision of advice from the public environmental authorities to the companies about ideas, experience and methods. This service is free of charge. Member companies of MiljøForum Fyn undertake to draw up an environmental assessment report within two years from joining the network and every second year after that. The environmental assessment report must comply with the criteria laid down by MiljøForum Fyn, including as a minimum:

• The environmental policy of the company

• Key figures and data for the most significant environmental impacts

• Assessment of environmental effects and a priority of actions to meet these

• Goals for continued improvements

• An action plan for improved environmental performance

The environmental assessment report must be submitted to MiljøForum Fyn and must be publicly available. The public environmental authorities and MiljøForum Fyn evaluate every environmental assessment report regarding the achieved results and action plans for future efforts. If the statement meets the criteria laid down by MiljøForum Fyn, the company is rewarded with a MiljøForum Fyn diploma and flag. An environmental assessment report drawn up as described in the manual meets the requirements of the statutory Green Accounting Report, and it bases on the principles of the international environmental management systems ISO 14001 and EMAS excluding requirements of an external audit of the management system itself.

ISO14001

The international standard for environmental management, ISO 14001, was launched in 1996 by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO is a cooperation between 153 national institutes of standards, and is the world’s leading environmental management standard. The standard was last updated in 2004.

With a certified ISO 14001 environmental management system, the company can document that its processes, activities and qualifications focus on minimizing the external environmental impacts.

The standard therefore requires/demands that the company commits itself to:

• Conforming with environmental legislations

• Preventing pollution

• Constantly improving their environmental actions

The standard hereafter describes the elements in a management system which will enable the company to meet these obligations:

• Environmental policies

• Planning

• Implementation and operation

• Control and corrective actions

• Managerial audit

EU Ecolabel

The objective of the EU Ecolabel, as the official European ecolabel, is to reduce the overall environmental impact from production and consumption of goods. The EU Ecolabel looks at the
entire journey of the product and the environmental issues that arise along the way – for the benefit of people, the environment and the earth’s resources. This means that the entire life cycle of the product, from raw material to production, use, disposal and recycling,
is included in the assessment when drawing up the requirements for an
eco-labelled product.

So far, the following products at Four
Design EU Ecolabel-certified with EU Ecolabel:
FourSure® 44, FourSure® 88, FourSure®
90, FourSure® 105 in the colours “Anthracite” and “Ebony Black”.
That the products are EU Ecolabel certified means that they meet the requirements decided by the European Commission.

EU Ecolabel-certified furniture must meet a long
list of strict requirements. Among other things,
these requirements secure:
• Minimum content of environmentally harmful
substances – to spare nature and
environment.
• Minimum content of hazardous substances – e.g.
so that the furniture does not release any harmful
gases.
• Reduced emission of the allergenic substance
formaldehyde from wooden boards – the
requirements are stricter than the ones of the
law and protect the people who manufacture the
furniture as well as those who use them.
• A product warranty of 5 years – the environmental
impact is biggest during the production phase,
and long durability, therefore, helps to limit
environmental impact.
